There are several things to consider when renovating a home, including the space available and how to maximize it by adding an extension to your house, increasing natural light with skylights, windows and glass doors, repairing or replacing the roof to avoid leaks or damage, the color palette, the overall aesthetic, and the balance between trendy decor and decor that is cozy and practical. These themes will be briefly discussed below.

1. Adding An Extension

There are all kinds of innovative and fun ways to add an extension to your home, such as turning the garage into a living space, converting the loft into an extra bedroom, building a stand-alone garden room, or adding a conservatory. There are great extension ideas online to help you get inspired. If you are growing your family or simply need more room to relax, dine or store items, these extensions can significantly improve your quality of life at home, without the stress and expense of moving to a bigger property. As well as making your home more liveable and using all the available space, extensions can add value to your home when it comes time to sell.

2. Increase Natural Light

To maximize the positive energy and homeliness of your house, you should do all you can to increase the natural light inside. You can do so by installing skylights, more windows, or glass doors in the backyard. It is no secret that natural light is great for your mental wellbeing and that artificial light alone can create a gloomy or sterile feeling if it is all you are exposed to all day. So, to feel truly happy and at peace in your home, you need to introduce some sunlight.

3. Roof Repair and Replacement

When you are thinking about ways to improve your home, one of the first things that should come to mind is to repair or replace your roof for better ventilation and peace of mind before harsh winter weather sets in. The last thing you need is a leaking roof, tiles blowing off the house and causing damage, and the electric problems that can follow suit. These issues can lead to expensive repairs and damaged property and are always best avoided. Contact a reliable roofing contractor and have your roof repaired or replaced before accidents and issues occur. You can choose the color and style of the roof to match the aesthetic of your home, so this is both a practical and a creative endeavor!

4. The Color Palette

When renovating your home, one of the considerations to make is what the overall aesthetic is going to be. This includes the color palette of the walls and furniture. While this may not seem like a significantly meaningful decision, it is in fact strongly linked to the overall mood of the home. For instance, darker colors can make a room feel cozy but do not highlight the brightness of natural light, while lighter palettes indicate openness and warmth and enhance the natural light. You might want darker walls in the living room where you relax before bed, but prefer a sunny light-yellow in the kitchen, where you work and need energy, for instance.

5. Modern or Antique?

When buying new furniture and designing the features of your renovated home, there are very different ways to go. You could opt for a modern and minimal style, or else decide to go for exposed brick, wooden floors, second-hand furniture, and a characterful older vibe. In fact, these days you do not need to choose between the two, as many people expertly mix the old with the new in a new style known as modern vintage. This is a trendy way to decorate a modern house but imbue it with the classic character of a vintage home.

6. Trendy or Cozy?

When you are deciding whether to opt for shutters or curtains and wooden floors or thick carpeting, you are often torn between the more aesthetically pleasing option and the one that provides the most comfort and practicality. For instance, shutters might not keep out as much cold as curtains, but they can add a rustic and stylish touch to a modern vintage home. The same goes for wooden floors, which can be a stunning focal point in a renovated kitchen or living room, but which also do not mask sound as well as a carpet, nor do they provide as much comfort. You should consider your priorities and decide based on what you find to be more important.

If you are thinking about renovating your home, you have several important considerations to make. These include the potential to extend your home, bring in more natural light, and repair or replace the roof to prevent leaks or property damage. You should think about the colors you will use, whether you want a more modern or vintage feel, and finally how to balance the stylish with the practical. Happy designing!
