Keeping the air conditioner in a working condition is extremely important for any homeowner. At the first sign of trouble, you should get it inspected. Your comfort can be compromised, and you will undertake hefty repairs if a problem is ignored for too long. Therefore, knowing when to repair or replace air conditioner is imperative.

There are some tell-tale signs when the air conditioning unit is due for replacement. Even with regular maintenance, there is a possibility that the AC unit will demand repairs. So, ensure that you are on the lookout for the following.

1. The Airflow is Restricted

If the unit’s airflow is restricted, it might be time to replace it. If you are used to cool air in all your home corners, then sudden warm air will surprise you. The restriction in airflows has to do with blocked vents and air filters. The best-case scenario is to have it repaired. But if the solution costs too much and there are other issues to deal with, replacement might be the best option.

2. The Air is Not Cold Enough

An obvious indicator of a problem with the air conditioning system is that the air it generates is not as cold as expected even after setting it at the right temperature. Deciding whether to repair or replace air conditioner is directly related to the quality of service you get out of it. It is better to take a professional’s opinion and get everything checked. If a skilled person fixes the issue, there might be no need for replacement.

3. There is Excessive Moisture and Leakage

Excessive moisture around the unit is not common and can indicate a problem. It can be a possible refrigerant leak which needs to be taken care of as soon as possible. The coolant should stay where it should be for the proper functioning of the AC unit and health concerns.

4. The Unit is Making Noise

The AC unit makes typical noises when the system cools the air. If loud noises like rattling and grinding are coming from the unit, a part might not function correctly. It can be because of a component malfunction. The motor bearings could be broken down, or a belt may slip out of place. The AC should be turned off and immediately repaired.

5. You Repair it too Frequently

If the repairs for the AC unit have become too frequent in the past few months, it might be time to replace it. Since you are paying so much for regular repairs, it might be better to invest in a new system altogether. Rather than continuously spending significant amounts of money, it is better to replace it with a better and new model, which would not need such repairs.

6. It Has Been 10 or More Years

If an AC unit has been functioning for over a decade, it is time to replace it. Your unit has already been operating for years which is more than enough of a return on investment. It is better to switch to a new model for more energy efficiency and better features.

Conclusion

Replacing the air conditioning unit is the last resort. The change in the air conditioner’s efficiency shows that a repair or servicing is required. If the unit requires frequent repair and makes unusual noises, it might be best to change it.
