When the sun is shining, you should be tempted to get some fresh air, head outside, and play some games in the backyard. That could be a sophisticated Croquet contest, an energetic bout at Badminton, or some throws at Outdoor Horseshoe. If you have a trim enough lawn, you should try some Lawn Bowling and set aside some space for Giant Connect Four. Invite your friends over, have a summer party, and play some of these exciting backyard games.
Croquet
Playing a game of croquet may seem exceedingly adult yet at backyardville, we have you covered with a guide on how to play it. A total of six friends can play and a set will typically come with six hardwood mallets measuring six by eight inches and large six by 28-inch hardwood handles. You should play in the sunshine yet the balls should be weather-resistant and there will be nine steel wickets with two hardwood ending stakes.
As long as there is grass, even if it is a little long, you should be able to play croquet. This is a pretty simple game to play, with the right croquet set. When you are ordering a set, ensure that it has a bag that can make transport so much easier.
Badminton
The game of badminton dates back over two millennia with similar games being played in ancient China and Greece. While a professional badminton match can seem exceedingly intense, take your time in your backyard. This should be a leisurely game that may only get a teensy bit competitive at times.
For the full set, you will need around four rackets (for doubles), an adjustable net, two bowls, and a few birdies (also known as shuttlecocks). The set should be designed so that you can have a game going inside a few minutes. When you do set up the net, try to ensure that one team is not unfairly disadvantaged by having to stare directly into the sun. Once you are done playing, it should be pretty straightforward to pack everything away in a carrying case, ready for your next gathering.
Outdoor Horseshoe
Even without a horse, a game of outdoor horseshoe is well worth trying. Try not to be too worried about the holes in your backyard as they should only be deep enough to ensure that the two 24-inch metal stakes stay upright. That’s when they are, hopefully, hit by any of four regulation-weighted plastic or metal horseshoes. You likely do not even need a mallet, as long as the ground is soft enough, you can push the stakes into the ground and get playing.
Lawn Bowling
Forget about heading off to the bowling alley, you can simply play a game of lawn bowling. The pine wooden set of ten pins may look even more attractive to the ones in your local alley. You should also get two bowling balls but these will be lighter than the balls you are used to chucking. It may get tiring to have to pick up the collapsed pins over and over again yet those are the breaks, if you play ten-pin bowling or European Skittle Ball.
Giant Connect Four
If you have a Connect Four board tucked away in the house for a rainy day, you should want to play a giant version when the sun is shining. Both kids and adults should adore this game and it typically comes over two feet tall and three feet wide. The best sets are made from formidable sealed and varnished wood which is heat, water, and humidity-resistant so it should not twist, warp, or split.
Try to find a spot in your backyard where the grass is not too long. Even though the pieces are relatively large, it can be tricky trying to find them in the depths of your yard. Essentially, this is a classy, oversized version of a board game and is great for kids looking to learn strategy.
Summary
Some of the best backyard games are almost effortless to play and should be really easy to set up. That includes Giant Connect Four which is a simple game where you only have to connect four chips together. Other backyard games, such as Outdoor Horseshoe, Badminton, and Croquet are best played on a trim lawn when the sun is shining. Pretty much everybody should be familiar with Lawn Bowling, even if you do have to set up the skittles yourself and the balls are very much lighter.
