How to decide if it’s time to remodel your kitchen

  1. Improve Ventilation: Ensuring that your kitchen has adequate ventilation is key to preventing mold growth. Ensure you have an exhaust fan above your stove, open windows when possible, and use air conditioning if available.
  2. Keep Humidity Levels Low: High humidity can provide a breeding ground for mold, so it’s important to keep humidity levels in check by using a dehumidifier or opening windows and doors to allow fresh air circulation.
  3. Clean Regularly: This includes wiping down counters and other surfaces, scrubbing floors and tiles, sweeping dirt out of corners and crevices, cleaning appliances like refrigerators and dishwashers, etc. Doing this regularly will help prevent mold from growing and spreading.
  4. Repair Leaks Immediately: Any leaks should be identified and fixed right away to avoid costly water damage down the line. This is especially important around sinks, toilets, tubs, and other plumbing fixtures in your kitchen.
  5. Use Bleach or Vinegar Solutions: A diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water) or vinegar will help kill mold spores on surfaces such as countertops and walls. Ensure you scrub the area well after applying either solution, and always wear protective gear like gloves and a mask when cleaning with harsh chemicals.
  6. Clean Gutters & Downspouts: To prevent moisture buildup, make sure your gutters and downspouts are free of debris and draining correctly.
  7. Avoid Using Carpeting: Carpeting can be a haven for mold, so try to avoid using it in the kitchen. If you have carpeting, ensure it is cleaned and dried thoroughly after spills or floods and that any water damage is addressed as soon as possible.
  8. Clean Kitchen Cabinets Regularly: Make sure to wipe down the inside and outside of your cabinets regularly with a mild cleaning solution like dish soap diluted in water or a vinegar-water mixture—this will help prevent mold from forming on any surfaces or materials used in cabinet construction.
  9. Replace Damaged Tiles & Countertops: Any cracked or damaged tiles, countertops, and backsplashes should be replaced quickly to avoid further water damage and the potential for mold growth.
  10. Check Window Seals: Make sure your window seals are not cracked or broken, as this can allow moisture to enter, which can then lead to mold growth. If you find any damage, replace the seal or call a professional for help.
  11. Avoid Clutter: Keeping the kitchen free of clutter makes cleaning easier and lessens the chances of mold forming.
  12. Use Mold Prevention Sprays: There are various sprays available that help prevents mold growth in the home, such as Moldstat or Concrobium. Read labels carefully for instructions and safety information before using these products.
  13. Inspect Refrigerator Drip Pans: Make sure your refrigerator drip pans are cleaned and dried regularly to prevent moisture buildup—and potential mold growth—in this area.
  14. Treat Window Sills with Sealant: You can use a sealant on window sills to prevent water from seeping through, causing damage, or promoting mold growth.
  15. Address Wall Mold ASAP: If you spot any mold on walls or ceilings, address it right away before the problem gets worse.
  16. Use Mold-Resistant Paint: Using paint that is specifically made to be mold resistant can help prevent mold from forming on walls and ceilings.
  17. Repair Leaky Pipes: Leaky pipes are one of the main causes of kitchen mold, so make sure to repair any leaks as soon as possible.
  18. Invest in Exhaust Fans & Range Hoods: Installing exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens will help keep humidity levels low and reduce the chance of moisture buildup, which can lead to mold growth. You should also invest in range hoods for your stove to suck up grease particles and other airborne pollutants before they can settle into crevices where mold spores might form.
  19. Install Air Movers: An air mover or dehumidifier can help keep moisture levels low in the kitchen, making it harder for mold to form.
  20. Keep Windows Open: Open windows to allow fresh air into the kitchen and reduce the chances of mold forming.
  21. Hang Kitchen Towels Outdoors: Hanging dish towels, pot holders, and other cloth items outdoors will help ensure they are dry and free from any potential mold spores.
  22. Disinfect Sponges Regularly: Make sure to wash your sponges regularly with hot water (or throw them away), as this will stop bacteria and mold from growing on them.
  23. Use Cedar in the Kitchen: Cedar has antimicrobial properties and can help reduce mold growth. Place cedar chips or shavings in drawers, shelves, and cabinets to keep them clear of mold.
  24. Clean Drains & Garbage Disposals Regularly: Make sure to clean your drains and garbage disposals with a mild cleaning solution regularly, as this will prevent grease buildup and potential mold growth.
  25. Replace Spongy Caulk: Caulk around sink basins, countertops, showers, tubs, and other areas becomes spongy when there is water damage underneath—this could be a sign of possible mold growth so make sure to replace any caulking that looks like this.
  26. Clean Kitchen Appliances Regularly: Cleaning kitchen appliances like stoves, microwaves, and refrigerators regularly can help prevent mold growth in these areas.
  27. Place Air Purifiers in the Kitchen: Placing air purifiers in the kitchen will help remove airborne spores that could lead to mold growth.
  28. Wipe Down Walls & Cabinets: Use a damp cloth to regularly wipe down walls and cabinets, as this will stop any potential mold from forming due to trapped moisture between them.
  29. Vacuum Behind Appliances: Make sure to vacuum behind your refrigerator and other large kitchen appliances every few weeks to help reduce dust buildup, which can feed mold growth.
  30. Check for Mold Behind Cabinets: If you notice a musty smell or see visible signs of mold in your kitchen, check behind the cabinets to make sure the problem isn’t hiding there. If it is, get rid of the mold and any affected materials before spreading further.

These are just a few ways to keep your kitchen free from mold. Following these tips and taking preventative measures will help ensure your kitchen stays fresh and healthy for many years!
