Useful Gadgets For The Repairs You Need At Home

February 19, 2023

Having smart gadgets which can perform in coordination with other devices altogether is nothing less than a boon, but if not appropriately safeguarded, your home Wi-Fi is like an open invitation to scammers, hackers, and cybercriminals.

They can easily access almost every smart device you own by spotting a minor vulnerability in your Wi-Fi connection. Not taking enough precautions can lead scammers and hackers to your online banking accounts, credit card details, and other sensitive and private information. They can even spread malware on your devices.

However, you can prevent these mishaps easily by working on the security of your network. Here are some tips you may find helpful in order to keep cybercriminals away from your network.

Change the SSID (Service Set Identifier) or the Name of Your Wi-fi.

The SSID (Service Set Identifier) or the name of your Wi-Fi is preset. Usually, the manufacturer gives a default SSID to a router; in most cases, it’s the company’s name. A computer will easily search and systematically list the networks that publicly broadcast its SSID, which makes it easy for hackers to target a network as there are chances that they may figure out the service provider. It would be better to change your network’s SSID to something that doesn’t reveal any information about your Wi-Fi connection.

Keep the Network Password Strong and Unique

If you already have a router, then you may be aware of the fact that the routers have a preset password which is easy to guess if a hacker figures out the manufacturer. So, try to change the password once you get your router installed.

Also, a lot of people keep the passwords as names and dates, do not do this. These types of passwords are predictable too. Try to use a password that contains 20 characters, including symbols, numbers, and alphabets.

Use VPNs to Access Your Network.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) helps create a private and secure connection, which encrypts and converts the information sent or received by your device’s Wi-Fi connection. This encrypted information is in an unreadable and untraceable format.

This way, the data transmitted using the VPN-secured network will be safe and private from the claws of hackers and cybercriminals. There are various VPN networks available in the market claiming to be the best, do your research and download VPN best suited to your budget and requirements

Network Encryption Will Help Secure the Network

Almost every router has a built-in Network encryption system. However, in some of the routers, it is disabled as default. You may need to enable it after your broadband provider installs the router. A wireless router’s encryption setting will help you secure the network. There are varieties of encryption available, but the most recent and effective is “WPA2”.

Turning Off Network Name Broadcasting Will Also Help to an Extent.

When someone searches for a Wi-Fi network to connect, their device shows them the nearest available networks ready to connect. But if you turn off the network name broadcasting, your network won’t show up to those who don’t know how to look for it.

It’s most useful for people who own a business, library, cafeteria, or hotel and prefers sharing their network with limited or specific people.

Your Router’s Software Should Be Up to Date.

Almost every firmware has flaws that can become significant vulnerabilities in some cases, which need a bit of fixing from time to time, which is done by releasing updated firmware by the manufacturers. Installing new firmware will keep the security patches up to date and cybercriminals at bay.

Try to Have a Good Firewall.

A firewall basically protects the computer from malware, viruses, and other intrusive stuff. There is a firewall by default in most of the routers. You just need to check if it’s on, and if it is off, simply turn it on.
