Energy generated by the sun for one full minute can supply the world’s electricity needs for 12 straight months. This also means that the power generated for 24 hours can provide us with the clean energy we need for 27 years. Besides being a dependable source of electricity, utilising solar panels is affordable.

To take advantage of the sun’s infinite power, green companies are continuously developing innovative solar panel systems that can store, generate, and utilise solar energy more efficiently. If you are finally making the conscious shift to clean energy, it is crucial to learn more about the different types of solar panels. Here are some of the most common solar panel systems available for residential homes.

Monocrystalline solar panels

Monocrystalline solar panels are the first-generation solar panels introduced when solar energy emerged in 1954. They are characterised by their dark cells and rounded edges. Made from pure monocrystalline silicon, this type of solar panel is known for its excellent, efficient rates.

The latest, higher-end models are more than 20% more efficient than older systems. Additionally, monocrystalline panels generate higher power output, last longer, are more compact, and easier to use for solar panel installation.

Polycrystalline solar panels

Belonging to the second generation of solar panel systems, polycrystalline panels are cheaper than their predecessors due to their more efficient manufacturing process. The square solar panels, uncut angles, and bluish-speckled appearance easily distinguish them.

Polycrystalline panels are made from raw melted silicon. While more cost-effective, these panels are less efficient and have a shorter lifespan. They are easily vulnerable to external factors, including higher temperatures.

Thin-film solar cells

A part of the second generation of solar energy systems, thin-oil solar cells are typically made from cadmium, copper, and silicon. They are installed on photovoltaic stations for smaller residential and commercial properties. Thin-film solar cells are highly adaptable and flexible to withstand higher temperatures.

These qualities make thin-film solar cells an excellent choice if you are short on budget but keen on switching from traditional to renewable solar energy for your home.

Biohybrid solar cells

Homeowners considering investing in advanced and innovative solar energy systems should look into biohybrid solar cells. This type of solar energy technology was developed to generate electricity from two sources, namely the sun and organic and inorganic materials.

An expert team invented biohybrid solar cell technology at Vanderbilt University. It leverages photosystem 1, a system that emulates photosynthesis. Combining multiple layers of photosystem 1, biohybrid solar cells can convert chemical energy to electrical energy, which is more effective than traditional solar panel systems. Numerous studies reveal that biohybrid solar cells are up to 1,000 times more efficient than first-generation solar panel systems.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a suitable solar panel or other green energy option for your home, it is crucial to reach out to trusted renewable energy manufacturers in your area. Your utility company may also be able to help you find a manufacturer of solar panels that meet your specific energy needs and budget. As installing a solar panel system in your home is a huge investment, it is crucial to do your due diligence before finally making a purchase.
