Your room is the reflection of your personality, hobbies, and habits. That’s why moving into a new apartment or dorm room can feel so exciting: that’s a brand new canvas for you to paint the picture of your life. But the pressure of doing it right the first time can be too much, especially if you haven’t done it previously.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the new classes and extracurriculars and forget about the “little” details that surround you. So, if it gets hard, you can grab your essay from a PaperWriter and start updating your new living space. The question you might ask yourself is where to begin this journey. And we have a couple of answers ready!

Let’s Start With the Essentials

The first thing we see when coming to college is a new, bare, and very empty room. Sure, it needs all the knick-knacks that will signify who lives there. But we need to begin with essentials and start filling out the living space with what you need the most.

Bed

It has been proven time and time again that if you have even a good kind of mattress and any kind of a basic bed frame – you’re all set. Students don’t really need anything fancier than what they already have.

Table

It’s hard to imagine a student room without a space to study. It would be a great idea to find something big enough to fit all the study materials you need but also compact enough not to take up all the space in your room. Pay attention to the comfortable height of the table and pick a chair that will fit well with it.

Shelving

If your room is small, vertical storage is the way to go! Purchasing a shelving unit is necessary if you have a lot of physical books. But even if your studies are online, shelves are the best place to keep all the personal stuff you might want to display. If you don’t like the idea of a bulky closet in the middle of your room, look into purchasing separate shelves. But they need to be screwed into the wall, so be sure that you can do it first.

Clothes Storage

Rule number one of a clean room is to have a dedicated place for your clothes. Your space will not feel clean if clothes are just sitting in piles everywhere. You might be seduced to buy a clothing rack by the Pinterest images of aesthetic rooms. But remember: your space will only look clean if there’s no visual clutter on display. So, a dresser or wardrobe, or both, will be the best choice to make.

Fridge

If we categorize everything you need for a comfortable life, food will be the first need. In the dorms, however, it’s easy to succumb to fast, cheap, and easy canteen meals. This means that you won’t really need an elaborate cooking space, but a fridge might be a good idea. If you’re a fan of cool drinks and healthy snacks, a mini fridge is a must.

A Bit of Spice and Everything Nice

After you’ve finished with every essential item, it’s time to add some details. If your walls are bare, you won’t feel at home, guaranteed. If you feel like finding your style and designing a perfect room is too much for you to handle, don’t worry! Just remember that everything shouldn’t be perfect on the first try. You just need to make the space lived-in and cozy. To do this, follow these five general rules.

Fix the Lighting

Living in a dull, poorly lit room will have effects not only on the visuals but also on the ambiance. If those aren’t that important for you, lighting also affects our mental health. There’s been tons of research that found adequate warm light is the most beneficial to our psychological state.

If you can afford it, it’s better to use a couple of different shades across the room than one bright in the center.

Hang the Curtains

Our advice to you – find good blackout curtains for the night and avoid using blinds during the day. Living in the city makes it hard to get enough sunlight during the day and rest well with all the lampposts during the night. The best choice for you is to find the curtains that suit your taste, are a good addition visually, and make sense in terms of usefulness.

Add Some Greens

Yes, it might be challenging to look after some plants, but you don’t necessarily need to make your life harder. Start with something small and easy, like succulents. These are your basic cacti and many more. If you have time and are willing to research, go into a garden center and ask a sales rep to help you. If you don’t, buy some fake ones online: they will work for livening up your space.

Update the Bedding

Since our beds are the place we spend the third of our lives in (minimum) and rest from hard days, it’s crucial to make them the center of coziness. Changing the bedding from the standard white sheets and using a throw blanket on top will easily make the bed comfier and homier. This advice works for the rest of the space too. Try throwing a fleece blanket on the couch and adding more pillows. Now, you will feel cozier everywhere you sit.

Fix the Smell

We’re not saying that your room stinks, but if you haven’t done anything special, the smell is probably not ideal. Since we tend to ignore anything that doesn’t have a visual expression, the smell of a room usually goes unnoticed. Better yet, we get used to it and stop paying attention. That’s why the decision to buy a couple of candles and a diffuser should be a conscious one.

Here are some Tips for Making Your Home Look and Feel More Peaceful

Believe in Your Home

What’s the point in having your own space if you can’t express yourself in the littlest details? Designing and furnishing your room is a great exercise in creativity and planning and just a good way to take your mind off studying. So get through your school assignment faster and get to the good part of living on your own!
