The invigorating essence of mint is found in multiple doTERRA products, from its Island Mint, SuperMint, and spearmint oils to its SuperMint Toothpaste and shampoo strengthening and conditioning bars. While the brand’s array of mint-infused products has captured significant global attention, some wonder what makes these minty products resonate with such a diverse audience.
The allure might appear simple at the surface, thanks to the crisp and clean aroma. However, a true labor of love goes into making doTERRA’s mint oils.
The journey of a bottle of peppermint oil begins deep in Mother Nature’s embrace. the brand’s sourcing partner has harvested up to 520 acres of peppermint at a time.
The Enlivening Effect of Mint: Making Scents
Mint offers more than a pleasant aroma; it’s a holistic sensory experience. Breathing in peppermint fragrance, for instance, can offer an energizing, awakening aroma, elevating mint-infused products from mere hygiene accessories to vital components for use in mindfulness and self-care practices.
Peppermint, scientifically known as Mentha piperita, is believed to be a hybrid mint species created through the natural crossbreeding of water mint and spearmint. Its use dates back to ancient civilizations, including Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Historical records suggest that peppermint was used for wellness, culinary, and aromatic purposes.
Today, this brand has adeptly harnessed these qualities in its product range, from essential oils to skin care, tapping into a growing demand for natural well-being enhancers.
Its peppermint and spearmint oils can be used in a diffuser to freshen the air instantly, or added to garbage disposals to quash unsavory sink smells. It can even be placed on a cotton ball and used in car air conditioning vents for an uplifting peppermint pick-me-up.
DoTERRA’s Dedication to Responsible Sourcing
DoTERRA is committed to crafting high-quality, sustainably sourced products. Through its Co-Impact Sourcing initiative, the company supports ethical, sustainable mint harvesting, supporting the well-being of farmers and their communities. This conscientious sourcing resonates with consumers increasingly mindful of product origins and environmental impacts.
The brand’s spearmint essential oil comes from plants in India that grow 11 to 40 inches tall. The brand reports that women do most of the farming in rural India.
Planting rice and wheat earns women in India just $100 per acre annually, according to the brand. In 2015, the philanthropic oil company paired with local entrepreneurs to help farmers find a way to grow their profits, and that included planting spearmint to skyrocket their potential revenue.
Gyanta, the brand’s farming partner in India, said in a YouTube video, “With traditional crops like rice and wheat, I’m not able to make the money year-round. Because the crop cycle is only three months, I am able to make much more money than before.”
Phulghrie, another farming partner, explained she was able to support her granddaughter, thanks to the additional money she’s earning. “It helps to buy her clothing and food,” she said. “I will also be putting money toward her education.”
Distiller partner Yash described teaming up with the brand as a positive experience.
“With doTERRA, the best part is they lay out the plans right at the onset,” Yash said in a video. “They’re very, very upfront, open, honest. And there’s a guaranteed buy-back agreement. It builds a lot of confidence across the supply chain that there’s a real buyer at the end who’s on the ground.
Bishnu Adhikari, doTERRA’s director of Co-Impact Sourcing, says spearmint growing is improving the quality of life for Indian farmers. “One of the women was telling [me], ‘When I grow rice or wheat or any other cereal crops, I have to work hard,” Adhikari said. “‘It’s hard work. But when I do spearmint and other cash crops, it’s not that hard and it’s only three months.’ So I think it will change the dynamics here.”
Efforts in Education and Community Involvement
The brand’s reach extends beyond its product line, with significant achievements in educating the public on the benefits of essential oils and natural solutions. Workshops, online resources, and community events have cultivated a dedicated customer base that values the items and the empowerment derived from this knowledge. With a fusion of Why doTERRA? quality, sustainability, and olfactory allure, doTERRA’s many mint delights represent more than a fleeting trend — they serve as a powerful “statemint” to nature’s role in enriching our lives day by day.
